Exhibition Paintings and Video Games

To show the pop- and high cultural reach of games, an exhibiton is taking place at PLAY AUSTRIA, where contemporary painting and video game production meet.

Unfolding Pigments: An Exhibition Manifesto of Paintings and Video Games

Although the pop-cultural reach of video games has been increasing for decades, along with the complexity of the content negotiated by the games, beyond the scope of the screen they are almost exclusively positioned in marketing and merchandise clichés – which often subjects this content to a kind of “voluntary banalization”. So how can a game be presented and contextualized beyond the game itself? This exhibition curated by Christian Bazant-Hegemark employs the art domain as a playfield in order to fathom artistic ideas conceived by game developers.

Broken Rules

Since 2009, Broken Rules has been developing unusual computer games which captivate with their unique artistic style and with themes that go far beyond common game clichés. In the current project Old Man’s Journey, for example, players experience the moving life story of an elderly man. The team working with Felix Bohatsch, Clemens Scott, Jan Hackl, Peter Vorlaufer, and Martin Pichlmair has won many international prizes with its games, which have been released on iOS, PC, Nintendo, and Android platforms.
